Stewardship

Christian stewardship calls each of us to generously share his or her own talents, time, and treasure and put them in service to others.

The choice which we make regarding sharing these resources is a personal one. We have all been blessed with different abilities, talents, and treasures. We also have been blessed with varying levels of those same resources. The commitment which we make is proportionate to how God has blessed us. This commitment and gift which one makes as steward is thus a personal calling and choice.

Prayer is the foundation of good stewardship. In prayer, we can speak with God and reflect on the many ways that we have been blessed. In prayer, we can listen to the ways in which our Lord calls us to respond to his call. In prayer, we can thank God for the many blessings we have received. As with any prayer, however, we are led to action. Through prayer, we can discern how God calls us to return a portion of our treasure to the Lord.

As we make a return to the Lord, we effectively participate in God's mission on earth. St. Paul tells us that we are one body with many parts. By giving of our time, talent, and treasure, we are participating members in this Body of Christ which is His Church. Christ calls us to be active participants, to "come follow me."

As St. Theresa of Jesus so eloquently wrote: "Christ has no body now on earth but yours; no hands but yours; no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he is to go about doing good; yours are the hands with which he is to bless people now."
